As a mom whose child is growing up in a world of social media, internet searches, mobile devices literally all at his little finger tips; I cringe at the thought of him having access to things that my husband and I would never imagine allowing him to see, read, or hear. We often use our computers or phones to listen to music or to scroll through pictures. Makes me think, if my 2 year old son can easily scroll through either of those devices to find our favorite tunes and photos the reality is he can accidentally, but easily have access to the internet. Yikes, where he can be subjected to a whole funnel of information that just isn’t suitable for his age. Fortunately, our son doesn’t have free range of these devices, but the day will come when he will head off to school with computer access and have the ability to run his own searches and be faced with so many distractions that he just wont need during his studies.
Although I have tried to think of ways to follow him through his school years that’s really not going to happen! That’s why we are so thrilled to learn about Bing in the Classroom provides ad-free, safe search for schools. Bing in the Classroom offers a customized version of the Bing search engine for use by students that allows enhanced privacy controls and for teachers to utilize filters to block adult content and ad targeting. So thankful and think parents of school aged children will be relieved to know this exists. I never spent that much time thinking about all the ads on the internet, but to really put it in perspective “pictures are a worth a thousand words” and can really pull in those little eyes. I’m pretty confident I’d prefer not to have those diet pill ads, latest Hollywood Gossip, or the inappropriate photos distracting my son while he maneuvers the internet. That is wonderful. As a teacher myself I know first hand that visuals are extremely important for learning.
